In 2010 Ms. Cohen was elected for District 10 of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, and was re-elected to a second term in 2014. In October 2013, Cohen introduced legislation that expanded an existing San Francisco law making it illegal to sell firearms with magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. The gun-control legislation passed unanimously. In 2015 Cohen publicly defended San Francisco’s sanctuary city laws. State Controller Malia M. Cohen was elected in November 2022, following her four-year term of service on the California Board of Equalization (BOE).
