Jackson’s many years of advocacy for women. Mentoring and staff diversity: Sen. Jackson has always had a female chief of staff and her legislative director is a woman. Her staff has always had racial, ethnic, and LGBTQ diversity. She looks for the best person, but also for people who have “that different experience,” because California is a state with a lot of diversity and “…it’s important to have all those voices heard.” Sen. Monique Limon Interview – Nov. 18, 2019

Interviewed by Karen Cahill and Laura Cardenas Mentoring of women in the political process Assemblywoman Limón was elected Vice Chair of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus. Hosted appointment workshops for state boards and commissions focusing on getting more women appointed. Monique makes herself available to present to women in leadership on how to pursue a path like hers. 38 out of 120 members of Congress are now women. Not at parity, but at highest number for California yet. Staff diversity Staff changes every year but continues to be diverse in both gender and ethnicity. 4 out of the 5 of District 37 office positions are held by women. Congressman Carbajal’s Legislation

Congressman Carbajal’s Legislation Bipartisan Sponsorships: 17 bills sponsored, 8 are bipartisan Feminist issues remain a top priority. With the Democratic majority in the House, we have been able to make significant gains and also block Republican attacks on the issues we care about. Unfortunately, the Senate remains a roadblock to getting pro-active bills to the President’s desk, though that is not stopping us from conducting hearings on important legislation and moving as many bills to the House floor as we can. SBWPC Interview with Congressman Salud Carbajal – 2019

On October 25, 2019, Lucille Boss and Anna DiStefano of the SBWPC’s Legislative & Advocacy Committee met with Congressman Salud Carbajal to review and discuss his work during the past year. Congressman Carbajal began the meeting by sharing an eight-page summary of his legislative work this past year. The hour-long discussion that ensued was free-flowing, cordial, and frank. The Congressman expressed pleasure with the diversity of his staff. Fourteen of 17 staff members are women, and 7 of those 14 women are women of color.
