Family homelessness disproportionately affects women, who are more likely to have experienced domestic abuse and make up the majority of parents in homeless families. Young women with children are especially at risk. The SBWPC Young Feminists Committee decided to volunteer to help this community in Santa Barbara by providing a dinner service at Transition House. Transition House’s mission is to provide a solution for family homelessness, through temporary or long-term housing, education and career development for adults, child care and support for school-aged children, and help with relocating families to stable, permanent housing (transitionhouse.com). Members from the Committee collected donations, purchased ingredients, and prepared and served meals for almost 50 residents. Engaging with the parents and children at Transition House was inspiring and rewarding, with many thanking us for coming and for choosing to prepare healthy dishes. We thank the WPC members who generously donated to make this event possible, and we look forward to continuing our involvement at Transition House with future meal services.
